Buy a Home Theater Projector

What do you have to consider before you buy a home theater projector?

Buy a Home Theater ProjectorThrow Ratio

The first thing you should consider before you buy a home theater projector is the space. Is your room big enough to put a projector in there? You need some space between screen and projector! A very important specification of projectors is the “throw ratio”. For example you have a 10 meter wide screen and you put the projector 15 meter away from the screen you’ll need a throw ration of 1.5:1.

Buy a Home Theater ProjectorOutput Brightness

The most important thing you have to consider when buying a projector is the ambient light of your room. The darker the better! Look for the output brightness when you buy a projector (it’s specified in Lumens). The more ambient light you have in your room the more Lumens your projector will need. With high ambient light you will need about 3000 Lumens, with some ambient light around 1500 and if your room is dark you just need about 1000 Lumens. The closer your projector is to the screen the fewer Lumens it will need.

Other things to consider

If you want to buy a projector a assume it’s for your new Home Theater, so don’t forget the connectivity! Look for what you need.

After buying the projector you don’t have everything you need. Don’t forget the screen and other peripherals you’ll need.

You will have to buy every year or so a new lamp for your projector so inform you about that.

So… all in one: you have to find the right projector for your room! Now you can do that.

I’m such a huge fan of movies and also television. They provide such a great escape from the day to day of everyday living. Movies and television can inspire us and make us think.

And if they’re really good, they can even make us reflect upon ourselves and our own lives. I love how your page is under reconstruction. After all, are not all of us under reconstruction in one way or another?

I was looking to buy a present for my mother’s birthday and I think I’ve just got the best idea, make her a theater room. I was quite fortunate to find your website SOS tuna what I should be looking for in a projector so that I don’t buy some overpriced stuff of low quality.
    Thank you, Alex.

    Hello there Sirio!

Very informative article here. You have outlined the major pointers of what consumers need to look for when wanting to buy a projector. Pretty basic explanation of each point, but still thorough enough to benefit readers.

I do not understand what you mean by ambient light though. Do you mean to say the brightness of my room’s ceiling fan lamp when it is turned on? Or maybe natural light coming from the windows? Would love to hear from you.

    Thanks a lot!

Hi there, thanks for the comment! There are quiet some things to consider when buying a projector…

About the ambient light: I mean the natural light coming from the windows, the light you can’t turn off ๐Ÿ˜‰

Interesting article! I had no idea about the specifications you should look for in a projector. My brother-in-law is currently looking to buy one for his TV room, I will be sure to recommend this site for him. Also do you know how much a projector light bulb costs to replace? Thanks.

    • Sirio Sperandio

If you want to buy a new projector you really should pay attention to this kind of specifications. About replacing the light bulb: the price depends on the projector, but normally it’s around $20.

I just moved into a basement flat, and I backroom that has really low light levels. Was thinking of using it for storage and quite honestly, nothing else. It’s so dark. You’ve given me a great idea to make a snug/cinema. Now I do I get my popcorn machine. The seriously it will make use of a room. No, sense of the room and free up space in the rest of the house. Thanks for the great idea!

Nice! Nothing better than a cinema room. Just check out my other reviews for projectors and projector screens…It isn’t that expensive if you don’t by the most expensive stuff.

Let me know if there is something I can help you with and let me know when you finished your room ๐Ÿ˜‰
